Skin Saviour #3: Vitamin D and its effects on my acne

As I mentioned in my previous post, my naturopath helped determine that I had a severe vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency is apparently common for asian women with pale skin, and particularly for office workers that spend all day indoors. Research says that humans only need to spend 10 – 20 minutes in the sun everyday and expose their bare skin to get enough Vit D to maintain healthy levels.

Although I do try to get outside at lunch time, the reality of an office worker is that you go to work in the morning and come back home at night.

So what’s this got to do with acne?

Skin Saviour #2: Maca powder to balance hormones

In my previous post I mentioned that through my naturopath/holistic health doctor, I found that I had a hormonal imbalance and ovarian cysts. I have also had quite bad period pain on the first day for the past 10 years or so, but thought it was just natural.

After discovering cysts on my ovaries, I was referred to a specialist gyno and she recommended that I go on a 3 month course of the contraceptive pill. However being an inner ‘greenie’ I just couldn’t bear the thought of putting synthetic hormones into my system in an effort to ‘fix’ what was essentially a whole-body health issue.

I’m no doctor, and I have no issue with others using the pill for various reasons, don’t get me wrong I’m not judging, but for me I didn’t feel like it was the best choice. If I find my symptoms still persist, I may go back and try the pill out of sheer desperation, I don’t know yet.

So what did I do to try and balance out my hormones?

Iridology: Eyes are the windows to your health

Highlighted bits are what my iridologist saw in my right eye.

Highlighted bits are what my iridologist saw in my right eye.

I’ve always wondered about the mysteries of iridology, but had never gone further than wondering.

Luckily, my workplace decided to hold a wellness day through a third-party service and iridology was one of the consultations offered. This was my chance!

I sat down in front of the practitioner and gave away nothing about my health. She then took out a small magnifying glass with a light and looked into both my eyes.

Skin Saviour #1: Facial cleansing brush

If you take a look at My Skin Saviours page, it lists all the products and factors that have dramatically improved my skin.

Number 1 on this list is my facial cleansing brush by Skin Physics – Derma Sonic(TM) Power Cleaning Brush.

Similarly to the Clarisonic, this brush claims that the “Cleansing Brush uses sonic frequency to clean, soften and smooth skin. In just 60 seconds, the brush gently yet thoroughly removes make-up, dirt and oil.” The aim is to get the ‘sonic’ power of the brush to dislodge and unclog pores of the impurities of your day.

It’s basically like an electric toothbrush for your face!

I started off sceptical.

My adult acne journey: how my naturopath helped me heal

I was battling persistent mild cystic acne for about 5 years when I started to crack.

I just got so sick of the bumps, lumps, pus, blood, squeezing, concealing, concealing, concealing. It was literally driving me insane, not to mention wasting my time and money. I also noticed that I had other ongoing health issues that I was SURE was related to my adult acne.

I’m a firm believer that acne is caused internally. To those doctors that told me that acne had nothing to do with hormones or diet, you shouldn’t be a doctor of so-called medicine. Acne is a sign from your own body telling you that something is wrong, and it was through my naturopath that I was able to pinpoint what exactly was wrong, that led me to finally being able to overcome acne to a large extent.

So what did I find out?

What works for me – my current skincare routine

My current routine is all about thoroughly cleansing pores without pissing off my skin with harsh scrubs, foams or acids. It’s the result of testing SO MANY different products over the years. Like you, I started by reacting to acne by punishing my skin with harsh products aimed at teenagers and slowly over time realising that less is more.

Here’s my tried and true skincare routine.

  • Remove make up with Bioderma Sensibio Micellair and cotton pad
It’s so important to remove all traces of make-up before using an actual cleanser, because chances are your cleanser won’t be able to the oils and waxes in most foundations and sparkly bits from blush and eyeshadow. My  theory is that these clog your pores that cause pimples.

My adult acne journey so far

I turn 30 soon. Felt like it was time to tell my story.

Like millions of other people on the interweb, I also battle adult acne. Battle, not battled.

It’s still there, but it’s gotten better. And I know why.

I’m here to share my journey with you.

I know how desperate it gets. How humiliating, how sad, how depressing, how low, how challenging acne, especially adult acne can be.

I’m here to remind you that it’s not your fault.

I spent so long blaming myself, maybe it’s the Catholic in me, but I only turned the corner when I realised it wasn’t my fault. I didn’t ‘do’ acne to myself.

WHAT HAPPENED? Continue reading
